Education Reform Needs to Start Here

MIRAMAR, Fla.-- The mother of a Florida middle school student is upset after her 13-year-old daughter came home from school and told her a teacher put tape over her mouth.

"I came home from a hard day's work to hear that my daughter had her mouth taped up unwillingly," said Leah Freel, Fox7News reports.

Jazlyn Freel said that at school on Thursday her teacher placed tape over her mouth to stop her from talking in class.

"She asked me to stop talking, and then a couple minutes went by, and I started to talk again, and she came to me and put it on my mouth," Freel said. "I had to cough, so I took the first piece off, so she went into her desk, and she took another piece out, and she put it on my mouth again.

After the teacher taped another student's mouth, Freel and her classmate went to an administrator
According to Freel, the teacher "told me to keep the tape on my mouth, and she told me that what happened in her classroom stayed in her classroom, and it was just a joke."

Unions provide no value...This teacher should be fired...not "reassigned".

  1. Definitely not a proper approach for the only adult in the room and in charge of the kids.

Mom is right, kids are kids and they will talk. But I wonder what mom did to make sure that when her child goes to school, she knows how to follow directions and not be disruptive. We don't know if this is an ongoing problem that the parent was alerted to or not. Still doesn't justify the tape thing BUT Florida legislators are calling for parent accountability too these days.

  2. We haven't heard much of the teachers side of the story.. If all is as it looks, or even close, the teacher needs to find a new line of work. Maybe alligator wrestling?

There are tens of thousands of teachers in Florida. Any group of people that large will have some who don't belong.

Sanda, can't say for sure, I don't know the lady, but I don't think I'd want to be the teacher who gave that mom a bad grade.

  3. Watching the video clip down to the end, mom knew her daughter was "chatty." No excuse for the teacher's reaction, but at 13, her daughter could use a little more parental encouragement to respect the teacher's request to stop talking and to respect those around her who might have wanted to pay attention. Mom and daughter aren't getting a lot of sympathy from me and neither is the teacher.

  4. Thing have really changed... I had a first grade teacher, who had been in the same classroom for thirty years. It took her less than a minute, on the very first day of school, to convince a class of over 30 five and six year olds that talking in class was not allowed..

She could and did keep kids after school to clean up her classroom if they broke her rules
